STORY
Habitat Island or also known as, Habitat Compensation Island, is a man-made island created out of leftover dirt, rocks, sand and other materials. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, when southern False Creek was being developed, the department of fisheries and oceans policy stated that if a shoreline was removed, another had to be created. Habitat island was created to attract and invite new wildlife and turned out to be a success. For example, a grey whale visited in 2010, beaver found living near it and many other permanent species like, the herring, heron, and eagle. In addition to this, around the same time, Hinge Park was also developed right next to habitat island. The design for Hinge park, encourages wildlife to come back to the area, while providing natural habitat. TOUR

Habitat island also creates a sanctuary for birds in the trees or bushes, when the tides get high, as shown in the photos below. When doors opened, everyone attending had to sign in. After we were all checked in, we got called to the science world theater, where various of students from other schools all over Vancouver got together, as we played games, watch skits, and videos on environment suitability. For the next hour, we got to explore science world, where they had multiple activities booths on the environment. I attended this one booth, called “Fraser Height Environment Club”, where we learned more about energy conservation and an efficient way we can help conserve energy. To wrap up this event, everyone got back together and ate a vegan meal, striving for a zero waste meal, while talking more in depth about helping the earth. Below is one of the videos we watched!
