Habitat Island or also known as, Habitat Compensation Island, is a man-made island created out of leftover dirt, rocks, sand and other materials. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, when southern False Creek was being developed, the department of fisheries and oceans policy stated that if a shoreline was removed, another had to be created. Habitat island was created to attract and invite new wildlife and turned out to be a success. For example, a grey whale visited in 2010, beaver found living near it and many other permanent species like, the herring, heron, and eagle.
In addition to this, around the same time, Hinge Park was also developed right next to habitat island. The design for Hinge park, encourages wildlife to come back to the area, while providing natural habitat.
